Citadel, one of the world's largest hedge funds, executed over 100 block trades worth more than $4 billion last month after acquiring positions from Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. The transfer followed significant losses in technology stocks, compelling Situational Awareness to dismantle much of its $16 billion public equities portfolio.
The transactions included some of the year's largest intraday block trades in 10 different stocks, according to Citadel. The firm, which manages approximately $77 billion in assets, declined to comment further on the specifics of the trades. However, Citadel's CEO Ken Griffin highlighted the firm's ability to quickly evaluate complex risks and execute trades with precision as central to their investment strategy.
Situational Awareness experienced a 67% loss in its portfolio value in July due to a selloff in AI stocks, which led to the unwinding of most of its public equities book. Citadel purchased some of the fund's positions at a discount exceeding 10%, a move that helped stabilize the market during the last two trading days of July.
“Our ability to distribute this risk was central to our investment thesis. These moments highlight our ability to quickly evaluate complex risks, deploy capital with speed and conviction, and execute with precision.”

Griffin and his senior team reportedly worked through the night to assess the trading positions of Situational Awareness and determine the feasibility of selling these bets. The cooperation of trading and prime brokerage teams at the banks serving both firms was crucial in completing the transaction.
Citadel Wellington, the firm's flagship multi-strategy fund, reported a 5.94% return in July, bringing its year-to-date gain to 12%. This performance underscores Citadel's adeptness at capitalizing on market opportunities amid volatility.
“A transaction of this magnitude could not have been completed without the extraordinary cooperation of the trading and prime brokerage teams at the banks serving both firms.”

Background
The recent developments underscore the volatility and rapid shifts in the financial markets, particularly in the technology sector. Situational Awareness's significant losses highlight the risks associated with concentrated bets in volatile sectors like AI.
Looking ahead, market participants will be keenly observing how Citadel manages the acquired positions and whether the firm continues to leverage market volatility to its advantage. The situation also raises questions about the sustainability of AI-focused investments in the current market climate.
