Breetzke's 150 powers South Africa to 304
10 February 2025
The right-hander smashed the highest individual score on debut and was well accompanied by Wiaan Mulder for the fourth wicket
South Africa posted a competitive 304 for 6 in the tri-series fixture against New Zealand in Lahore, thanks to a superb 150 from debutant Matthew Breetzke. Supported by Wiaan Mulder's 64, the side finished strong by adding 108 runs in the final 10 overs.
After being sent in to bat, South Africa made a steady start despite losing captain Temba Bavuma early to a sharp bouncer from William O'Rourke. Breetzke then steadied the innings alongside Jason Smith (41), stitching a crucial 93-run stand before Smith was run out with the help of a throw from Mitchell Santner.
With the platform set, Mulder joined Breetzke and the duo built a 131-run partnership for the fourth wicket, keeping the New Zealand attack at bay. Breetzke reached his century off 128 balls before accelerating, smashing 11 fours and five sixes en route to 150 off 148 balls, the highest individual score on debut. His dismissal in the 46th over, caught off Matt Henry, threatened a shift in momentum but Mulder ensured the runs kept coming.
The final overs saw aggressive hitting from the lower order, with Mulder's five fours and a six helping South Africa breach the 300-run mark. Henry (2 for 59) and O'Rourke (2 for 72) were the pick of the bowlers but New Zealand's pacers struggled at the death and the side now stares at a tall run-chase.
