Opportunity for younger guys to come into challenging conditions - Latham
13 April 2026
The New Zealand skipper is hoping the second-string side will gain useful experience in the white-ball series in Bangladesh
New Zealand skipper Tom Latham insisted that it's a great opportunity for them to test their bench-strength against Bangladesh as several of their frontline players are unavailable for the series due to commitments in tournaments like the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League.
The first batch of New Zealand squad reached Dhaka on Monday morning while others are expected to reach later at night for the six-match white-ball series. Latham believes the makeup of the squad still offers enough experience to compete though it's a new-look New Zealand squad.
"It's obviously a slightly different looking squad to what we're used to with guys at IPL and PSL, it presents opportunities to some younger guys, or maybe guys with a little less experience," said Latham
"But if you look at the squad as a whole, everyone's played for New Zealand at some point. The more experience we can get into some of these guys obviously builds depth throughout our line-up."
Latham said that adapting to spin-friendly conditions in Bangladesh will be key to earn success in this part of the world and stressed on the importance of preparation and reading conditions closely.
"You look back on previous games and try to get as much information as you can. But heading to Bangladesh, we know that spin plays a massive part," he said. "Understanding that things may look slightly differently than what they do in New Zealand is important."
"The work you do leading up to the game is really important. Hopefully you can start well, which makes a massive difference. It's important we always adapt. It's a really good opportunity for younger or less experienced guys to come into challenging conditions. We'll take it game by game, try to enjoy it as a group, and if we play well, hopefully we'll be where we want to be at the end," he added.
The team will take a day's rest before beginning preparations on Wednesday at the Sher-e Bangla National Cricket Stadium that will host the opening two games of the three-match ODI series.
The first two ODIs will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on April 17 and 20, before the teams travel to Chattogram for the third match on April 23 at the Bir Shreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium.
The first two T20Is will be held in Chattogram on April 27 and 29, with the final game scheduled in Dhaka on May 2. Bangladesh began their preparations for the series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on March 27.
The board said they will bring the start time forward by three hours for all three ODIs scheduled in Dhaka and Chattogram, with the aim to finish the matches by sunset, which is around 6:30 pm during this time of the year as Bangladesh to save energy
The ODIs will start at 11:00 am. The three T20Is will start from 2:00 pm with an aim to finish them by 5:30 pm.
